<image:title>Scholarship Award Winners - 2020 Naomi Rabb Winston 2-D Visual Art Scholarship Recipients - Justas Varpukanskis, 2020 NSAL Scholarship Winner</image:title>
<image:caption>Justas Varpucanskis was born in Chicago, Illinois, 1997. He attended the Florence Academy of Art, graduating from the Advanced Painting program. Justas was awarded the prestigious Fourth Year Prize where he is currently pursuing further study and personal research in the materials, philosophy, and methodology of the Florentine High Renaissance masters. His work mainly focuses on portraiture, trying to see the contemporary world through the contemplative and neoplatonic lens of late medieval Europe. He views this contemplative quality as an antidote to the clutter and busyness of modern life. On a technical level he tries to develop a working method which mirrors what was done in the workshop system. This includes everything from toning ones paper, to preparing panels, to grinding and mulling oil paint. Alongside portraiture Justas wishes to develop more complex and narrative figurative work that would deal with timeless and classical themes.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Testimonials</image:title>
<image:caption>I am so grateful for the experience I had with NSAL in 2021 and the experiences I continue to have with the organization. Getting the chance to connect with leaders of the dance world and receive not only their notes on my performances and classwork, but also advice on auditioning for companies was invaluable to my career as a ballet dancer. The feedback I received was invaluable as I began the transition from student to professional. The generosity of NSAL also helped provide me the financial ability to travel nationally and internationally to audition for different ballet companies; without their support I would not be where I am today. After two seasons dancing with the City Ballet of San Diego, I am excited to share that I will be joining Nevada Ballet Theatre as a company artist for their 25/26 season, something that would not be possible were it not for NSAL. I cannot express how truly grateful I am to NSAL for all of the support I’ve received over the past year. Since entering the woodwind competition, I have been touched by the level of empathy and selflessness that exists at every level of this organization. I feel so lucky to have been a part of your efforts to uplift and inspire young artists. The work you do is extremely valuable, and I thank you fro the bottom of my heart.”</image:title>

<image:title>Testimonials - I cannot understate the impact that the NSAL’s generous prize has had upon my career. Such a prize quickly gains and holds attention. Immediately after receiving the first place award local and regional media outlets picked up the story. Within the artistic community such news travels quickly, and it was not long before I received invitations to give lectures and demonstrations as a visiting artist at various institutions. Over that summer I was picked up by Davidson Galleries, one of the premier print dealers in the country. Around the same time I was hired to lead a workshop for Frogman’s Print and Paper Workshops, and the director specifically mentioned the competition as influencing his decision. In these regards, the NSAL was instrumental in establishing my credentials. Thank you!</image:title>

      <image:title>NSAL Writing Scholarships - Marissa Watanabe - First Place</image:title>
<image:caption>Aloha mai kākou, My name is Marissa Watanabe. I am a fourth generation Japanese-American, born in Honolulu, Hawai'i. Growing up in Kaimukī, an old town that raised my parents and now fosters me, I have been able to develop deep connections with my community and the many cultures of Hawai'i. Since I was young, I’ve had a great love for writing short stories. Now, at 19 years old, I am blessed with the opportunity to continue my studies in English at the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa. “Kaimukī Love Story” was a little thing I wrote as a college freshman; a local teen love story created before ever experiencing that kind of love myself. It was the first short story I’ve ever written and finished, and it surely won’t be my last. Mahalo nui loa to the National Society of Arts and Letters for the opportunity to share my work! <image:caption>My name is Hailey Soucie, and I am a BSc Bioscience student at the University of Limerick. I grew up in Lincoln, Nebraska, and went to Lincoln High School where I was surrounded by immensely talented educators and peers. For my entire life, I've had creative ambitions and a strong passion for the written and visual arts. I spend my free time writing, drawing, and otherwise creating. I participated in the International Baccalaureate Programme, where my conviction that the humanities and STEM share an immense overlap was founded. Because of my educators and family, I've always been supported in pursuit of my passions-- including writing. A special thanks to my IB educators at Lincoln High who gave me the confidence to put myself out there, and to my family for their lifetime support. A Beloved Son Ages 16-18</image:caption>

<image:caption>The Martorella Scholarship is in remembrance of my opera loving grandfather. As a tiny child he had me sit on his lap as he listened to the Metropolitan Opera radio program on Saturday afternoons. Who knew that I would start to sing at age nine, become a soloist in church, have leads in musical theatre and operas. My Papa was very proud of me! Now, I am pleased to be able to honor the memory of Bernardo Salvatore “Benny” Martorella by helping young talented opera singers in his name! — JUDY MARTORELLI, National Chair</image:caption>
